Eco-schools Approach: Integrating Energy Efficient and Sustainable Fuel Wood Production for the Conservation of Mt. Kenya

The Renewable Energy Technology Assistance Programme (RETAP) will assist 20 schools in Mt. Kenya who are planting wood lots in their schools and installing energy saving stoves in their kitchens. This project will help relieve pressure on the Mt. Kenya forests where the schools get their fuel wood from and at the same time make the schools self sustaining in fuel wood.

Capacity - Building Component

The school communities will learn about the new technology of improved stoves and how it impacts saving of fuel wood and ultimately mitigates global climate change.

Notable Community Participation

The school community, i.e. the kitchen staff and students will participate in this project. The former will learn how to use the improved stoves and the latter will take part in planting and tending the woodlots.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The schools will save about 60% of the money they use on fuel wood annually and will, in time, make more money from selling the excess fuel wood from the wood lots.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The twenty schools in this project will save acres of forest land annually by using improved stoves and will collectively plant 100 acres of forest land for fuel wood. The combined effect will help to mitigate climate change.

Project Results

Initially, the project was to target 20 schools as eco-model schools. And the improved energy-saving institutional stoves were installed in the 20 schools. However, the 20 schools could not accommodate all the tree seedlings, mainly because the school compounds were either not large enough, or there was a problem of insufficient water. And therefore, more schools were identified, and in total, 60 schools benefitted from the woodlot establishment activity. the expansion of the project to additional schools allowed for wider publicity of the project and a demand for seedlings from interested parties including teachers and staff.
The project was successfully completed, and has been upgraded to a medium size GEF project.
