Environment Charter for the Tourism Industry in Mauritius
Environment Charter for the Tourism Industry in Mauritius
This project aims at setting up an Environment Charter for the Tourism industry in Mauritius. The Charter will contain a series of actions to be implemented by the hotels and other stakeholders of the tourism industry so as to make the protection of the environment an integral part of their day-to-day management. The other objective of the project is to demonstrate the commitment of the hotels and the other stakeholders of the tourism industry to bring about sustainable tourism development. This is being done through awareness raising on the actions initiated in the tourism industry to mitigate the impact on the environment caused by the operations of the hotels and other related tourism activities. It will also prepare hotels and other operators for certification with the environment standard ISO 14001 or the Green Globe Certificate. The GEF/SGP grant is being used to implement the project in 3 phases: setting up of the charter and testing in 10 hotels, implementation of the charter in at least 30 hotels and finally monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the charter among the participants.
