Sustainable Agriculture through Agro-Forestry Programme.

The purpose of the project was to improve the degraded land through wide spread awareness regarding hill forest wasteland development and agro-forestry system, involving and assisting the local community in developing more effective model in planning, maintenance and protection of environment. The project also proposed to stop shifting cultivation/ podu cultivation, reduction in the deforestation activity by the tribals leading to environmental protection, make tribal women aware of their environment and start up some income generation activities for them to contribute in the family income.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

As the main target for project implementation were the tribal women in the area, the women were organized into Self Help Groups and these groups were given awareness generation trainings in hill forest wasteland development and agro-forestry system and thus involving and assisting the local community in developing more effective model in planning, maintenance and protection of environment.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The main beneficiaries of the project were tribal communities in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The tribal communities, whose main livelihood comes from forests have been motivated to pursue agro-forestry practices, which will continue to provide far-reaching benefits to them.

Capacity - Building Component

The project achieved the objectives by reclaiming wasteland through capacity building of the communities in better agricultural practices and nursery rising. The project also stopped shifting cultivation/ podu cultivation, reduction in the deforestation activity by the tribals leading to environmental protection by making tribal women aware of their environment and start up some income generation activities for them to contribute in the family income. Hence, the women were imparted intensive trainings activities like nursery raising and low cost farming practices

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project provided experiences through trials to replace the existing inappropriate methods of agriculture and promotion of new eco-friendly and sustainable low cost farming practices. Tribal communities have been motivated to pursue agro-forestry practices, which will continue to provide far-reaching sustainable benefits to them. The women have been imparted trainings and have been assisted to start alternate livelihood generation activities like nursery raising. These interventions have made forest-based livelihoods more sustainable and reduced cost of farm based livelihoods.

Notable Community Participation

The project strategy was to involve the community in all the stages of project activities and build rapport and ownership amongst the community. The women were organized into Self Help Groups in order to institutionalize and sustain the activities in the long run.

Gender Focus

The project was implemented through capacity building and empowering tribal women. The women have been formed into Self Help Groups and these groups were the primary vehicle for project implementation. Tribal women through the Self-help Groups, have raised most of the Nurseries consisting of cashew, coconut, tamarind & eucalyptus.

Project Results

The project has received co-financing Rs. 1.2 lakhs from Forest Department. The tree plantations undertaken by the community have created a community ownership rights approach. Most of them are local species which withstand the drought conditions. People strongly feel that the plantations will continue to provide benefits to the community at least for the next 40 years.
