Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Farmers have been capacitated to be self reliant in terms of producing organic compost locally without much cash inputs. Dissemination of organic techniques for better livelihoods between farmers was explored. The organic farm developed is to be a training centre for the local farmers in the coming years. All the disappearing varieties of rice and dal have been sown on this organic farm. Self help groups have been formed. There were demonstrations held for framing practices which reduce global warming. The project has built the capacity of the NGO in terms of land, office buildings, computer and poly houses.
It was felt that through proper planning and motivation this kind of project can be replicated elsewhere as well. The idea as well as envisaged in the project can definitely be up scaled to MSG.
Notable Community Participation
For the rain water harvesting tank the local material and all unskilled labour was provided by the villagers. The benefits achieved for the beneficiaries are starting of seed bank, which would provide the farmers with the seed varieties that are in the process of disappearing. The project through its focus on promoting both biodiversity conservation and practices of organic farming will in long run to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to small and marginal farmers of the hills. These farmers are getting marginalized due to shift in farming towards hybrid seed varieties chemical fertilizers and pest control and intensive irrigation that goes with such farming practices. The Project is also contributing to conservation of their Natural resource base i.e. traditional seed varieties thus providing sustainable livelihoods. In the organic demonstration plot some indigenous seeds will be grown. The organic farm serves as a demonstration centre and the indigenous seeds varieties grown are disseminated in the village where farmers are encouraged to start growing these varieties
