Planting of a beach front area in this eastern coast village of the conflict zone where the population is mainly moslems. Approximately 1 acre in extent of beach front was converted to a green 'biodiversity' plot with trees.

Approximately 1000 plants were planted on this plot with several rows of casuarina trees as a wind break and for fuel wood while other trees such as cocounut were also planted. The adjoining plot is a privately owned coconut plot which is growing very well.

In order to protect the trees from animals and other offenders a plastic coated wire mesh was erected around the plot. The area is a recreational area for the community which is mainly displaced persons from the conflict along with the original villagers. Over 2000 people are said to come to this area of the beach in the evenings for pleasure and as an escape from their congested and crowded living quarters.

The 26 December 2004 tsunami destroyed almost all of the trees as the worst effects of the waves were on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. It has been reported that NGOs and INGOs are now visiting the place to study the after effects of the tsunami on these trees in order to plan rehabilitation of the coastal areas.
