Energy Efficiency Training for Youth Leaders
Energy Efficiency Training for Youth Leaders
It is clearly perceived that ,sooner or later, the world conventional energy is on the verge of depletion. Thailand is , to a very great extent, dependent upon the imported energy such as oil and gas. The energy Thailand is able to produce by itself is energy from hydro-plant. The cost of construction of a hydro-plant has always been a dear one, for it means huge forest area to be devastated. Notwithstanding, an average Thai society are still wasting the energy and drive itself into an economical problem as it does now . In addition, the process of energy production and procurement is more or less causing environmental problems both in long and short term.

One of the most effective ways to solve the problems on energy is to raise awareness which will lead to the transformation of wasteful behaviour and conformation to the changing situation. Therefore, the persistent education and awareness-raising process of human is of utmost important and immediate. By providing information and knowledge, human beings are able to gain insight on the relationship of ecosystem and sources of energy. They are able to classify the appropriate technology and adapt their behaviour to suit the changing circumstances. Moreover, they can provide more sources of energy and reduce pollution by planting trees.

Youths are the future of the country and the world that require instillation and education on attitude towards energy and environment. They are also the high potential group in carrying out the campaigning works and diffusing the subsequent impacts into other communities.

After 7-year of experience with youths around the Khao Yai Range, the Khao Yai Concern Group (or Rak Khao Yai Group) regards the present system of education on energy as insufficient for youth training and lack of youth leaders and networking. The present system still needs a more substantial curriculum for participatory approach to successfully carry out the energy efficiency project including planting trees to provide more sources of energy which will improve the Thai economical situation and environment at large. Eventually, the capacity of the youth network will be built, and ready for coping with other environmental problems.

Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):

1. To formulate the course for youth training on energy efficiency
2. To train youths to be trainers and leaders on the area of energy efficiency
3. To setup energy efficiency networking of youth groups for further collective campaigning at provincial level
4. To encourage youths to provide more sources of energy and carbon sink in the world by planting trees

Activities to be carried out under project:

1.To formulate the youth camp training course by collective effort of 30 resource persons and experts through a 3-day workshop
2. To launch a youth leader camp training for 50 persons for 3 days
3. To organize a 2-day seminar among the youth leaders aiming to share experience and to initiate networking and collaboration for scaling up activities at provincial level
4. To launch campaigns at provincial level by 200 youths from 8 schools
5. To launch a nursery project and distribute the seedling to youth leaders and communities for plantation

Project participants and/or beneficiaries:

- There emerges ,at least, 50 youth leaders in 8 schools who are instilled and subsequent networking to carry out the activities in a sustainable way
- There is one big- scale campaigning in the target area
- There are 500 more trees as fuels and carbon sink
