Provide electricity for 35 households in Janahithagama village through micro hydro power generation by Human & Environmental Developement Organization

Constructing of micro hydro with community participation, strengthen community organization, awareness raising on protecting the forest with the watershed; capacity building of members through training, monitoring of activities. The micro hydro will service 35 familiies for domestic lighting - vital for this remote village which is not included in the national grid expansion programme. The villagers are a settled colony more or less ignored by authorities and grows tea in home plots or are hired labourers.

Project Results

Providing electricity to 35 households in the village Janahithagama through the 5 kw. micro hydro facility; minimizing the use of non-renewable energy i.e. Kerosene oil for lighting. Saving of approximately Rs. 400/= per household on doemstic lighting.

With the energy generated during the day, 2 village members have started small businesses - i. an electrical repair shop & ii. a communication centre using CDMA facilities.

Five village members bought mobile phones indicating an ability and a desire to communicate freely with the outside world - an achievement for a village which has been cast aside as the poorest of the poor.

NGO Capacity building - in their own words 'they have been able to achieve so much in the field of renewable energy especially in micro-hydro construction. They are now able to provide services on - Advisory service on micro hydro construction to others; construction of turbines; members trained in wind energy use and construction of unit; construction of Mini hydro power units.

With the experience gained from constructing the unit at Janahithagama, they have been able to construct 8 micro hydro units in the district.
