Environmental education and awareness raising for local communities and schools in some villages adjacent to Mt. Kilimanjaro in Moshi rural, Rombo and Hai districts

This project on environment conservation education is implemented by the WCST and hosted by the Marangu Teachers Training College. The project's main objective is training and awareness rising in environment conservation in schools and communities living around Mt. Kilimanjaro. Also the project aims at promoting conservation education through student teachers who upon their graduation will then transfer the knowledge to primary and secondary school of their duty stations.

Other objectives of the project includes raising the awareness that Mt. Kilimanjaro is a World Natural Heritage Site to local communities and their role in conservation as well as to address solutions to reduce encroachment into Mt. Kilimanjaro forest.

Capacity - Building Component

Local communities and schools will be trained on how to adopt Mt. Kilimanjaro friendly conduct and attitude in order to contribute to the conservation of natural resources on the mountain.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is a World Natural Heritage Site. It is home to a number of globally significant biodiversity. Therefore its conservation contributes to the conservation of the global significant environment.

Training on Agro forestry, ecol farming and the use of fuel efficient cook stoves focus on the reduction of workload to women.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Training on conservation best practices will be conducted to local communities. Wide adoption of these practices will contribute to achievement of sustainable livelihoods.

Project Results

Project has produced and disseminated environment conservation education materials such as brochures, booklets and newsletters which are relevant to conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro to communities and Schools around the Mountain. The project has also used radio programs to educate the communities on the Best practices which can contribute to the conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The Project has prepared a booklet which informs other stakeholder key threats to the Mt. Kilimanjaro ecosystem in order to prepare joint action to reduce the threats.

The Project has facilitated through a participatory way the formation and strengthening of village environmental committee which will address and implement the bylaws which are related to the conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro resources.

The Project has constructed big sign posts which show that Mt. Kilimanjaro is a World Heritage Site and all community members has the duty to conserve it.
