The objective of this project is :
(1)To alleviate poverty through increased agricultural production througth rehabilitation of community based irrigation scheme (Umbwe OnanaIrrigational canal).
(2) To increase efficiency of Umbwe Onana irrigation canals and ,
(4) To promote water and soil conservation among farmers and water user of the Umbwe Onana irrigational canal.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

In Africa, food production and processing is mainly a pre-occupation of women. Irrigation technology will therefore reduce women workload and improve livelihood to women led households.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Increased farm yields leads to high farm incomes and food security at household level. This, in turn leads to sustainable lievelihoods.

Capacity - Building Component

Increased productivity is the hallmark of the project. Farmers are therefore trained on how to increase farm yields through irrigation technology.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Poverty is cited as the main factor that prompt villagers to degrade Mt. Kilimanjaro. Improved livelihoods of local communities will decrease extractive pressure on the mountain. This in turn will regenerate natural resources on the mountain. This iniative will help to promote public awareness on global environment because Mt. Kilimanjaro is a globally significant ecosystem.

Project sustainability

The project sustainability lies on the trainings provided to farmers on operation and maintenance of the irrigation canal.

Project Results

(1) The project has enabled farmers to double crop production. Increased crop production led to increased incomes. The project has lined by cement 1,800 meter of the canal thus increase efficiency of the canal from 20% to 60%

(3) Project has provided training in soil and water conservation to the local communities, 40 farmers are able to apply soil and water conservation techniques.

(4) Project has increased the number of women by 45% in water users? committee of the irrigation canal. Thus the project has increased the participation of women in irrigation activities.

(5) The project has contributed in the conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro forests by establishment of 3 homestead tree nursery and plant 8,000 trees on open area measure 2ha.
