Energy farm to reduce encroachment to the forest reserve for fuel wood

This project intends to reduce demand of fuel wood to villagers in Marangu and Machame by 75% by the year 2003 througth adoption of fuel efficient stoves . The project main activities will be training on construction of fuel efficien stove and tree planting. The establisted energy farms will increase the supply of fuel wood and reduce the encroachment to the forest reserves of Mt. kilimanjaro for fuel wood. the project will aslo create source of income for this group of women as they will be able to sell efficient cooking stoves and tree seedlings.

Project provides policy feedback on the effectiveness of of joint forest management policy which provide benefits tothe communities and conservation work.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Project will contribute in reducing of extration of fuelwood from forest reserve of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The natural forest of Mt. Kilimanjro holds most of the globally significant biodiversity. the project will promote public awareness conservaton of this forest.

Capacity - Building Component

Project will train over 400 women on how to install, operate and maintain fuel efficient cookstoves. The same number of women will be trained on how to establish energy farms for household use.

Planning non gef grant

The project has been replicated by Moshi municipality by construction efficient cooking stoves to all primary schools which receive meals at school.

The project has been replicated by other groups by establishing town tree nurseries and busness on sell of fuel effiecient cooking stoves

The project is owned and operated by a women group. The project focus is to reduce workloand of women roles of gathering fuelwood and cooking.

The project promoted agroforest practices which will increase family income and crop harvest which will create sustainable livelihood as the land is the mojor economic asert of the people in Kilimanjaro.

Project sustainability

The project sustainabilility lies on the trainings which were provided to the group memebrs on contruction of fuel efficient cooking stove which they will construct and sell as well as on selling of the tree seedlings which are produced by the froup.

Notable Community Participation

The project was conceived by beneficiaries. 40% of work during implementation will be done by beneficiaries.

Project Results

(1) This group of Women is now owning a woodlot of 20 acres of land.The gorup also has a tree nursery of diiferent types of tree seedling, flowers and medicinal plants.

(2) The group have increse its income through the sale of seedlings and construction of fuel efficient cooking stove. The Group has constructed a demonstration hut of different types of fuel efficient cooking stoves of which it is used for training of other groups.

(3) The women demonstrated the possibility of establishing energy farms, which will increase fuel wood supply whcih will reduce extraction pressure on natural forests of Mt. kilimanjaro as Shari village in Machame is closer to the Natural forest of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
