A faunal and floristic study was completed during the project implementation period. The study included an extensive field research to gather data on physical (soil, physical and chemical characteristics, environment and landscape features), biological (floral and faunal diversity and distribution), and socio economic status(resource utilization and human interactions) of the sanctuary. Upto 75-80% of fauna and flora species in the forest were studied and identified.

To complement the bio diversity information a survey on the forest resource utilization by the communities in the periphery of the sanctuary too was undertaken.

A documentary film of 30 minutes duration was prepared, captioned ?Asirimath Kurulukele? (Scenic Kurulukele). The video entailed bio diversity information that was gathered during field studies and the community perception about the threat to the same. This was used in awareness raising activities.

About 180 plant specimens were collected during the floral surveys and these were identified and preserved as specimens and mounted on herbarium sheets so that the specimens could be used as an identification guide to the plants found in Kurulukelle. The museum included the preserved specimens of birds, reptiles, butterflies, amphibians, shells of snails and mammals.

08 School Environmental Societies were formed in 08 schools and a Network (SESN) formed. Students in secondary and upper secondary classes studying in science stream were targeted as members of SESN. The students were led into the forest and encouraged to understand the fauna and flora diversity with the guidance of the herbarium. Environmental quiz programmes and essay competitions were also conducted in order to enhance the knowledge of the students on the value of Krulukele.
