Promotion of Green Economy and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources by Local Communities in Rural Sabah

This capacity-building project is focused on: (i) Providing capacity building in green economy and resource management; (ii) Supporting sustainable and organic farming and cultivating traditional medicinal gardens among rural indigenous communities in Sabah, with special emphasis on the participation of indigenous women; and (iii) promoting sustainable livelihoods eg. community eco-tourism, Sustainable Forest Management System, etc.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

All project-related activities and consultations will involve the men and women of the 8 indigenous communities participating in the project. However, there will be a special emphasis on the participation of indigenous women.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Discussed on a one-on-one basis by CBO and project participants over the course of the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Indigenous local communities involved in the project will be supported to adopt sustainable livelihoods (growing and marketing organically grown products and local community-made handicrafts, eco-tourism, agro-tourism, home-stay tourism, and sustainable use of cultivated hardwood trees, flowers, and traditional medicinal plants and herbs that are endangered).

Capacity - Building Component

Indigenous local communities will receive capacity-building training in the following areas: Organic farming; Using organic fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides to reduce environmental pollution from agrochemicals; Promoting community eco-tourism (camping, nature guiding, jungle trekking management and administration); Setting up nurseries and traditional medicine gardens to conserve plant and tree species under threat; and Marketing products (eg. eco-tourism, organic produce, tree seedlings, etc.),

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The local community project partipants are mainly indigenous Dusun from Sabah. Local community events, such as the annual socio-economic gathering in Long Pasia for Village Socio-Economic Groups (VSEGs), the Village Product Fair, and other local community events and gatherings, will be used as opportunities for awareness raising about the project and obtaining support for the sustainable livelihoods adopted by the indigenous local communities.

Notable Community Participation

This project is a collaboration between 8 indigenous local communities to strengthen their capacity in enhancing economic returns through activities involving management and conservation of biodiversity. Local community participation has been a major part of the project from its initial planning stage.

Project Results

The project activities was focused on

Eco tourism
- Assessment was done on Management of Eco tourism areas
- Jungle trail, resting huts and camping sites were prepared maintained.
- Promotional pamphlets were also produced and distributed.
- The home stay project was maintained
- Training on eco tourism promotion was held among the participants
- Training on agro tourism
- The traditional long houses were maintained
- Fish ponds maintained
- Members of the community were given exposure and training on eco tourism promotion.
Sustainable and organic farming
- Training on process of organic inputs and organically grown products were held
- The wet rice areas were terraced and proper drainage system was installed
- Fodder crops were planted for buffalo rearing
- Chemical free food processing workshop was held
Green enterprise
- Training of Micro enterprises (Sales of seedlings and the Management of a nursery)
- Nursery of commercial tree species was established
- A few village bazaars wee held
Land management
- Dialogues were held with the government on land right issues
- Communal land was mapped
Watershed management
- Trees were planted in watershed areas. Plant nurseries were maintained
- Gravity water supply was built and is being maintained.
- A micro hydro project was built
Traditional Medicine Garden
- Traditional medicinal garden was established and is being maintained. And the protocol on medicinal plants was implemented
- These gardens were also fenced and the plants were labeled.
