This capacity-building project aims to ensure watershed areas in Sabah are protected and conserved by local communities; address land tenure issues to ensure community interests in resource management are addressed; provide environmentally-sound economic activities; and raise awareness on the importance of wildlife management and indigenous natural resource management systems.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

All project-related activities and consultations will involve the men and women of the 7 target local communities.

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity-building training will be conducted for the 7 local communities in watershed management, land management, wildlife management, eco-tourism, and sustainable organic farming.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Discussed on a one-on-one basis by CBO and project participants over course of project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Higher level of economic well-being will be promoted among the local communities through their paticipation in sustainable livelihoods and alternative income generaion activities (eg. eco-tourism, organic farming, etc.).

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The community-based project participants are mainly indigenous Kadazan and Dusun from Sabah. Work on project activities will be done collectively by the indigenous communities in keeping with their traditions.

Notable Community Participation

This project involves 7 local communities in Sabah. Project planning has been done with area coordinators from the respective communities. These coordinators, in turn, will be working closely with the communities to ensure community participation in all the project activities.

Project Results

The project activities was focused on

Watershed management of which
- Watershed boundaries were mapped and identified
- Gravity water supplies built and are being maintained
- Trees were planted including in the catchment areas
- Nurseries were established
Land management
- Inter village boundaries were mapped
- Land status were identified and the applications submitted by the land committee which was established
- There has also been dialogues with the government on land issues
- Communal land boundaries were also mapped
- Follow-up ongoing on the disputes and applications submitted.
Wildlife management
- Community hunting licenses were applied for
- The community protocol on wildlife was formulated
- There were a few wildlife management workshops held
- Community hunting areas were zoned
Eco tourism
- Heritage garden was established and is being maintained
- A mini museum was built and artifacts collected
- Trails and resting huts were built and are being maintained
- Signboards and posters were prepared and have been placed strategically.
- Home stay project is being maintained
- Training and exposure to the communities are being continued.
Sustainable Farming
- Community interest have been identified and workshops were held (organic farming etc)
- A village product fair was also held
- The grazing ground is being maintained
- Buffalo rearing is being carried out
