Water Catchment Management and Water Resource Utilization for Small Agri-Processing and Electrification Project

The project intends to develop and install a 24-kW micro-hydropower system for community electrification and conserve a 25-hectare watershed area. In particular, the project site is within the major watershed area of Davao City shared by the communities of Polocon and Marahan where the two (2) SGP-funded project are found. In addition to promoting local actions to address climate change, this project supports the idea of "corridor approach" where the watershed is a critical/important biodiversity corridor.

Capacity - Building Component

Community level of monitoring and evaluation would ensure sustainability of the project and keep track of the organizationla development, management and the overall operation of the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The environmental impact of the project is it enhances environmental protection through the replanting and regeneration of indigenous tree species through community actions where maintenance and protection is ensured towards long term sustainbility and development. The development impact of the project is on its contribution towards the improvement of the quality of life in the countryside by generating better lighting condition, improves quality of basic education, creates job by promoting rural industry and hopefully reduces pressure from rural to urban migration.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The establishment of micro-hydropower corn mill and coffee huller would augment productivity and family income and this would result in capital build-up to support other community development projects. Being coffee-producing community, the availability of coffee huller being run by micro-hydropower would enhance better quality of hulling and therefore commnad better pricing for the product.

Project Results

The project was able to achieved the following: installed a 24-kilowatt micro-hydropower system providing power to at least 150 households and operation of agri-processing facilities (rice and corn mill, and coffee huller); planted and maintained at least 1,000 indigenous/hardwood and fruit tree species in a 25-hectare watershed area for biodiversity protection and maintenance; trained at least 25 community leaders and members for the operation and management of the project; strengthened community organization and produced a functional organizational structure; and built corn and rice mill and coffee hauling facilities for sustainable livelihood projects for the community members.
