Development of Kham River Watershed and Rehabilitation of Natural Resources by Hill-tribe Cultural Approaches

Demonstration & Capacity-building activities of community for the rehabilitation & protection of water resources which involve traditional agriculture , demarcating conservation & fire break zone, revegetation, networking etc. Target population are residents of 15 villages whose livelihood depend upon the river and its provision.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

As the NGO is locally-based with leaders as members of target population, community participation was fairly notable.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

By an ILO Convention, target population is a tribla people whose social,cultural and economic conditions distinguish them from other sections of the national community , thus regarded as indigenous people.

Gender Focus

Even though there was no specific plan for gender issue, several project leaders are female. In the course of project activities, men and women were working together hand-in-hand.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Promoting public awareness of immediate local environment was quite notable through the emergence of environment network of 45 communities in the basin.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The environmentally-freindly agricultural practice is the occupation of target population.

Capacity - Building Component

There were several components on capacity building through training on environment protection activities and study tours to successful communities.

Project Results

1. 780 rais of reforested area in 10 communities for sustainable use and as a hydrologic protection
forest (18,000 trees)
2. Precise demarcation for cultivated land, residence, community forest and conservation forest
(with approximate area for each category)
3. Eight events for collaboration among community members and government agencies with
subsequent network of eight communities carrying on conservation activities
4. 250 families practicing indigenous non-chemical agriculture and promoting food security for long
term sustainability
5. Emergence of resources inventories, especially on environmentally and natural resources-related
aspects.

Participatory Evaluation: ( 12 December 2003 )

Participants: All members of target population ( 80 participants )

Methods: 1. Questionnaires to all members of target population
2. Evaluation by network committee through rotating meetings in target communities

Impact: Under the participatory evaluation process, secondary target population/outsiders had participated to share experience and propose working process for expanding/replicating into new areas , based on good practices of the project. One outstanding impact was the emergence of environment network for 45 communities residing in the Kham Basin.

Future Plan:

1. Replicating/expanding project approaches into other communities in the basin
2. Establishing centre for nature exchange in highland areas
3. Promoting market for chemical-free agricultural products
4. Coordinating activities on renewable energy / energy conservation for improving livelihood
