Physically 25 beneficiaries were trained whereas 25 farms are developed in such a way that they can replicate it every year by following the Sloping Area Land Technology (SALT) method and other Compost pit methodology to have enough plantation which will give yields week after week for sustenance and maintenance of their daily management. At the same time this type of practice does not require shifting from one place to another, which will indirectly conserve the bio-diversity as a whole unlike the traditional system of jhum. Since the beneficiaries has to concentrate only on one farm, the need of cutting the forest and burning for shifting cultivation does not arise which is the basic achievement of the project and it is worth mentioning that the project could generate income from the reap of harvests.

The project is categorized under the 4th Operational Program of GEF that is Biodiversity Conservation by enhancing the sensitivity of the community and introduction of improved farming skill by learning on their own farms and concentrating in one farm with an aim to enable them to participate in decision making, self initiation in village eco-conservation and alternative shifting technique. With this practice, jungle burning will be stopped on the long run, which would definitely have an impact on the global environment.

The project addressed the component of sustainable livelihoods through the practice of alternative shifting cultivation where income-generating activities like banana plantation etc have reaped good income to the beneficiaries when sold at the local market. The strategies are simple and clear to the fact that the villagers participate themselves in the project implementation and partake the challenge of making the world a better place to live in and thereby generate their income from the resources adapting the technical skills in modern farming system.

Most people living in the project area are tribal and are indigenous people. The people living in this area are the Mizos having a common lingua franca and speak Lusai language and are said to be one of the first settlers in the hilly terrain of the North East. Most Mizos are cultivator by profession in the village and has a distinct cultural heritage. The project challenged the very basis of their livelihood and culture and the farmers have been very slow to accept at the beginning. The alternative method does not have drastic changes, but can stop burning of jungles to a large extent. The response by the farmers as regards their own plots has been positive.

The project is very much suitable for replication in other communities or regions, especially in the state of Mizoram, as most of the farmers practice shifting cultivation which is affecting the global environment. The root cause of this devastation is that, the farmers have no alternative ways to solve their problems, so, they are compelled to practice the indigenous ways of shifting cultivation to survive themselves and their family keeping ignorant about the degraded forest ecology. If this technology is taken in a large scale it can have an effect on the global environment. The NGO was informed of scaling their project for which they require to submit a proposal to UNDP-GEF for the medium size grant.
