By the end of the project, most villagers had been sensitized to the ecological functions of the park and were aware of the potential economic benefits that could be derived from helping to co-manage this protected area with the Forestry Department.
The boundaries of the park had been cut and demarcated, giving local hunters ample indications as to where the parklands were. Some of the more successful hunters in the area had been hired as park wardens and were involved in several training programs through the Belize Audubon Society and the Forestry Department. Through these training and employment efforts, these individuals could not only apply their natural knowledge and experience to effective management and protection of the park, but they were also provided with an alternative source of income that allowed them to abandon commercial hunting. Although occasional illegal hunting and fishing still occurred in the park boundaries, most people were informed of the protective status of the property and most illegal slash and burn agriculture and limestone harvesting had been brought under control.
