North-East is one of the richest biographic zones in the Indian subcontinent. Its tropical rainforests are home to many of the bird species. This North-eastern Himalayan region includes Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland and Mizoram. Due to the exceptional concentration of bird species with high level of endemism which are threatened by felling, hunting, shifting cultivation and developmental activities deplete the rich biodiversity of this region. In order to save and conserve the rich biodiversity of North-East it was considered necessary to conduct workshops for the local NGOs and community. The involvement of such stake holders, in long run is helpful and assists the conservation activities present as well as future.

The object of the project was to train people and make them understand the importance of the bird species as a bio-indicators. Their existence for future with its relation to the habitat shared along with the humans was agreed to by all participants. We saw to it, that more locals are involved in these workshops, as they are the caretakers of the habitat and birds of their region. They also served as a means of spreading the conservation message locally. It was also seen that people took interest in learning various bird census techniques apart from their concern for conservation. Their queries for conservation and the issues relating to the same were satisfactorily dealt with, generally with what they can do.

The project was community driven which was implemented with the collaboration of local community and they were given the responsibilities to organize all the workshops, which was good experience for them to learn how to organize the workshops, how to handle large number of people.

Through this project local organizations capacity enhanced which contributed to the project success and now they are able to get funds to sustain the organizations.

The project was very good as tool to increase the public awareness toward the biodiversity especially bird conservation in the Northeastern states.
All workshops were organised by the local people and they have contacted the local media to cover the events in the daily newspapers. This project was also an important part to strengthen the IBCN and local network.
Local people, NGOs and Forest Departments personnel were trained enough to use the new knowledge towards biodiversity conservation.
