The project comes under the 3rd Operational Programme of GEF (Forest Ecosystems) that is conservation of biodiversity of rare and endangered plant species. It concentrates on provision of management and utilisation of locally available medicinal plants, collection of germplasm for conservation and propagation through nursery and herbal garden. The project also addresses sustainable production and commercial use of these herbal plant species and livelihoods for local and indigenous communities residing nearby areas. This has direct bearing and response to the provisions of Biological diversity act of Government of India. The project addressed a need to balance biodiversity conservation with sustainable use in order to satisfy economic and social needs of the community.

The project focused on the aspect of Germplasm conservation of local endangered species of medicinal plants with herbal values, which is important for conservation of biodiversity of the region. The idea behind this concept is also to create market for commercial utilisation of these herbal produces so as to create sustainable livelihoods for the poor villagers and unemployed youth. As of now the project has achieved its main goal of establishment of Medicinal plant Nursery and have successfully disseminate the information on medicinal plants and their ecological importance and bio-composting techniques among the project's target beneficiaries i.e. the college youth and local community. The implementing agency (Duliajan Branch of Assam Science Society) has started selling the saplings to the local community for their home gardens and to Assam Gas Company Ltd. @ Rs. 10 per seedlings. 10 potted Marigold plants have been sold at Rs. 35 per pot so far, and 100 Kg of vermicompost have been sold at Rs. 10 per Kg. Also the college youth and villagers are very much interested to produce vermi compost for their farm and non farm (home garden) purposes.

The project-implementing agency is advised to take initiatives for further funding from other donors and govt. dept. in support of the conservation measures. It was suggested that a second phase of project can also be developed and put up to the SGP for GEF grant, to sustain the project activities and scale up the activities. It is strongly felt that the implementing agency i.e. Duliajan Branch of Assam Science Society and the people involved in the implementation are highly motivated and dedicated towards the project's success. Efforts have been made and opportunities are being explored for commercial viability for the herbal produce in order to develop links between the herbal companies and herbal gardens. In order to market a bulk production of herbal produce and to motivate village community it is an important need of the project at this stage. This will certainly provide a strong source of commercialisation and base for long term viability of the project.

The project attempted to bring about certain issues of local conservation of medicinal plants. It was suggested to Duliajan Branch of Assam Science Society that according to SGP agreement (MoA) it is required to sent the sample of collected Germplasm and project reports to the Director, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Conservation and Survey Division (Biodiversity), Ministry of Environment and Forests. It will serve the purpose to provide a list of conserved Herbal Germplasm to support the national policies and research.
