The project can be categorised under the 3rd Operational Program of GEF (Forest Ecosystems), that is conservation of indigenous rare medicinal and fruit plants of Assam and propagating them in order to conserve the biodiversity of the area. It concentrates on provision of management and utilisation of locally available medicinal plants, collection of germplasm for conservation and propagation through plant garden.

The project was not designed to address the component of livelihoods for the area but no doubt it is seen that such an activity can raise the component of income generation for the schools in the long run. The plants can be sold in the local market as being of medicinal value they have great demand among the local people.

The project was run by community people and experts from the implementing agency and they were involved in the implementation of this project and have acquired proper knowledge of indigenous variety of locally available medicinal plant species and their propagation. Capacity building was the key component in the project that was enhanced through awareness and training programs on collection and preservation of indigenous plants and their importance. Through these programs the community were informed that preservation of such species could lead to sustainable sources of livelihoods. It was observed that people are keen to take up such activities in large scale.

The community had helped in collecting some of the plant species and also provided with bamboos as kind cofinancing. The NGO had contributed an amount of USD 1555.

The project can be replicated to other schools in different districts. The project-implementing agency is advised to take initiatives for further funding from other donors and govt. dept. in support of the conservation measures. It was suggested that a second phase of project can also be developed and put up to the SGP for GEF grant, to sustain the project activities and scale up the activities. In order to market a bulk production of herbal produce and to motivate village community it is an important need of the project at this stage. This will certainly provide a strong source of commercialisation and base for long term viability of the project.
