Bio-Diversity Samitis; Efforts to Preserve Common Properties.

Project purpose is natural resource management through baseline susveys, formation of stakeholder groups and biosamitis, development of nurseries/seed banks and biodiversity education centres.

The project involved local communities in the sustainable use of natural resources by making them stake holders in the process of biodiversity and natural resource conservation. The activite undertaken were Formation of biodiversity samities, training of samiti representatives on natural resources management and biodiversity issues, development of nurseries, seed banks for important species, establishment of biodiversity education centers for the demonstration models of different processes like compost making, hay making, propagation of different plants and preparation of education material.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

- Low cost herbal medicines catering to a wide range of human and animal ailments are now readily available in rural areas whichis a major impact forthe sustainable livelihoos. -Nurseries reduce the dependence on the environment for these plants. -The mortality and morbidity of livestock in the regions we has gone down all these changes are the emphasis of the sustainable livelihoods.

Capacity - Building Component

- NRM Samitis have been formed only in 2 villages, different activities and programmes were taken to adjoining villages and have thus reached out to 11 villages. - Medicine kits for both humans and livestock have been made. - Farmers have begun to see the usefulness of this project and there are requests for further training

Notable Community Participation

- There are heterogenous community groups whose objectives are different have participated effectively. - Samiti members need more time to absorb the training imparted and then act on it. Also, it has not been easy for them to involve the entire village community in this process but some how could manage maximum members.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

-Medicine kits for both humans and livestock have been made. -An excellent collection of 135 species are being maintained in the nursery -This year, the nurseries managed to provide upto 20% of the raw material for some medicines. -It was found that AIDS is emerging as a major concern in the villages and hence, awareness programmes on the same were conducted and a movie on AIDS was screened.

Gender Focus

The organization policy is to have at least 50% women participating in our programmes . We also pay equal wage rates to men and women , which probably few other institutions do that a woman karyakarta from Ratnagiri has been a Sarpanch . One of the girls from Ratnagiri is comfortable with the computer , the only karaykarta male or female which is and we plan to encourage her to enter village records .

Policy Impact

The Samiti members have established links with local government departments, the Forest Department, local district level newspapers and another NGO called Prayas. The local agricultural departments have installed vermi-composting units at the Biodiversity Centers.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

people handle the marketing and sales of the medicines they make. Earnings from the sale are kept in a separate fund, which will be used for more medicine making activities and for supporting the health worker network. However, ANTHRA will manage the fund till the representatives are trained to handle accounts. Medicine making is now a regular activity of the Samiti members.
