Regulating Bio invasion in Banni Grassland in Kachch.
The project aimed to assess the impact of invasion of Prossopis juliflora on habitats on Banni grasslands and to generate awareness among local people about the loss of biodiversity and the impact of invasion. It also aimed to regulate the P.Juliflora and promote grassland in Banni on a sustainable basis.
Project Goal
To develop and recommend mechanisms for regulating the Prosopis Juliflora invasion by people's participation
To undertake demonstrative implementation of recommendations.
The project was completed successfully. The approach followed was to discuss cost benefits of regulating P.Juliflora with village sarpanch and elders. Women?s participation was not active due to factors such as low education, purdah system etc. Through repeated discussions and interactions with various officials, local communities and district administration, the major difficulty, which was the government apathy towards the issue, was overcome.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Communities in Banni participated in the project from the initial stages. The locals were sensitized through group and individual discussions about the benefits of promoting grass to retain their traditional profession and pride. The ownership of the project was indicated through the end result, i.e, Banni people created more than 50 grass plots, on their own, before rains this year. During the discussions the weaknesses of Banni people were pointed to them and they were advised to be more enterprising.
Capacity - Building Component
The capacity of local communities was strengthened by sensitizing about the invasive nature of P.Juliflora, impact of repeated cutting for charcoal making and the loss of cattle. After observing that the locals had initiated activities to promote grass, a small amount was provided as incentive to enhance the capacity of ?Ghas Samitis? in seven villages.
