People's Biodiversity Conservation Programme and Setting up Biodiversity Conservation Park.
The project involved documentation of biodiversity in the selected villages of West Bengal. It was a community-based programme involving young participants from local educational institutions and a selected number of teachers. The project also aimed at imparting field base training as also linking with traditional ecological knowledge covering diversity of plants, birds, insects, and agricultural crops. The study was expected to lead to the setting up of Biodiversity Resource Centre in the sample villages at selected local high schools. The Centre would maintain a collection of local biodiversity resources, the people's biodiversity register and relevant educational exhibits. It would function as community resource centre with meetings, training programmes etc

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
During the project period repetitive interaction with the local community and discussion meetings with the farmers have changed the perception regarding the relationship between land, water and soil with that of biological diversity. It has created significant awareness about the process of sustainable agriculture and led to better understanding regarding cost benefit between current agricultural practices and with the traditional practices followed earlier.
Notable Community Participation
It was initially proposed by the civil society organizations but could only be achieved through collaboration with accredited community based organizations (CBOs). As such, it became a community driven project. During the process of implementation and even after completion, complete participation of CBO representing the local community was recorded. This helped to a great extent in the success of the project.
