The most important objective of evolving ? Environmental work stations? using the 10 firms as representatives of their sectors was successfully addressed. In this context, an environmental workstation had been established at a firm where comprehensive analysis of the process in order to understand causes of origin of wastes was understood, based on which the options for mitigation would be listed. It was important to recognize that emissions in the context of small-scale chemical industries in particular could also be particulates, acid mists, vapors of solvents etc. The exercise accordingly focussed also on locally significant pollutants. Emissions apart, the quantities of liquids and solid wastes were also well within the domain of cleaner production. Treatment of these wastes also entailed use of chemicals and energy. A cross-sectoral integration of the quantities of wastes generated, in relation to the amount of chemicals and energy expended could also provide insights into the scope for minimizing wastes. These quantities assumed significant proportions when the benefits of the project through interventions in more than 50-100 industries, as referred above, could be achieved through the MSP.
