Promoting Animal Husbandry for biodiversity conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods for Rural Women leading to Ecological Conservation.
Promoting Animal Husbandry for biodiversity conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods for Rural Women leading to Ecological Conservation.
The NGO had prior experience of working in the area and had conceptualized the project through the regular interactions with the communities during the earlier part of the year 2000. The proposed project intended to conserve the bio-diversity by reducing the grazing pressure on forestland, reduce the fuel-wood pressure by promoting biogas as a means of cooking energy, strengthen the groups of rural women for conserving environment & bio-diversity and improve their livelihood sources. The major activities involved were to build the capacity of the community; especially women to enhance their income from animal husbandry by promotion of green fodder cultivation through demonstration and extension work, promote vermiculture for better manure and pollution control and arrange credit inputs to the community for animal purchase.

Project Characteristics and Results
Replication of project activities
In view of the impacts of the project, the NGO had discussions with the neighbouring NGOs, CBOs and other stakeholders to scale up the approach and build a sustainable model on a larger scale. Accordingly a scaling up project has been sanctioned to spread the approach to two districts with a matching grant of USD 19,230 from the GEF and the Ministry of Environment and Forests respectively.
Capacity - Building Component
The approach adopted by the NGO was customized according to the local needs and the capacity, location, size and costs of the biogas plants were determined based on the need of each household. This led to acceptance of the technology and continuous improvement through capacity- building of the community in the masonry work, maintenance and management of biogas plants. Trainings were also imparted in animal husbandry and off-farm income generation skills.
