Fishing community participation on management of bio-diversity in the Chilaw lagoon through conservation of Mangrove vegetation by Small Fisheries Federation of Sri Lanka
Implementation of bio diversity management through the conservation of the Mangroves in the Chilaw Lagoon. The pogramme was largely aimed at reinforcing the objectives of ensuring livelihood security of the poor small fisher communities (including women) engaged in fishing and related activities. Through this project the local community was made well aware of the symbiotic relationship between mangrove eco systems and the livelihoods based on estuary and lagoon fishing. The project supported to raise awareness and to develop a plant nursery which were used to restore a large extent of denuded mangrove area extending to more than sixteen (16) acres. A plant study of mangroves was undertaken and support was provided to the community members to study mangrove types that should go into the nurseries. Several sites for nurseries were demarcated with the assistance of external experts and the local community members were mobilized in planting mangroves.
