Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
In promoting public awareness of the Global Environment,WEMDAP has carried awareness along the communities of the Banz area as well as engaging an environmental theatre group to convey through drama the significance and importance of conserving and protecting their indigenous plants and animals that will contribute to the concern and participation towards the protection of the global environment. WEMDAP's efforts to protect the indigenous animals was covered by the media, when the Post Courier, one of the two leading newspapers in PNG, highlighted WEMDAP as the "NGO to rescue of Echidna". WEMDAP identified one echina species, Tachyglossus aculeatus (short beak) from the identified two species in PNG. WEMDAP is mobilizing resources to go to the area to identify the habitat of the echidna, hold meetings with landowners to promote the idea of conserving and protecting them, although this species is a common species, environmental specialists support its conservation for the future generations.
