WesternHighlands Capacity Building & Forestry Programme
The lack of proper information dissemination, demonstration of the deforestation causes in the highlands provinces was the result of this workshop that was held for a week. The Participants were local leaders, ordinary people, CBOs/NGOs representatives and others who were trained the concept of nursey managemnet with input on technical advice from National Forest Service staff in the province. The project involved activities such as the building of the provincial model nursery with 100,000 trees seedling from the Provincial office of the PNG National Forest Service, Training on Nursery Managemnet with technical input from forestry personnel, with specific attention to 20 leaders of the current NGOs/CBOs in the province. But the programme accomodates activities of further assisting the participants in documenting project proposals and conduct another 3 month training in Project Proposal Writing and certify the participants as being suitable to write project proposal to UNDP GEF SGP PNG for funding.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Certain species that are adapted to the local conditions and are culturally useful ( traditional herbs, building materials, weaving of "bilums"(string bags), fruit trees etc. can be nursed well,for economic benefits as well as environmental benefits.
Gender Focus
The Project Coordinators to begin with are both females, with at least 50% of women from CBOs/NGOs participating.
