Diversification of the agricultural production through native vegetable crop and protection of the biodiversity by mean of the reforestation with 4 native fruit trees to preserve nine springs in Los Espinos, Los Amates, Izabal.
Project seeks to introduce new productive activities for the people, and improve the income of the participants. Beside, seeks to preserve the nine springs located around of the community, and to protect the biodiversity in the area.
To run the project, the participants will plant 24 hectares with 4 different species of native fruit trees, close and around of the nine springs.
Beside, they will plant in Companion Plant System, at least four species of native vegetables, in a land of 0.7 hectares. This species will be as following: "Chiltepe" (Capsicum annum var. Aviculare), a kind of hot pepper; combined with "Hierba Mora" (Solanum Nigrum guatemalensis); "Chipilín" (Crotalaria longirostrada) and "Bledo" (Amaranthus spp; for these 3 last plants the leaves are eatable and they are used as source of Iron and Vitamin "A". The production of this native vegetables, will supply of money income in the short term.
In another hand, the participants will plant 4 species of native fruits trees to obtain money income in long term.
To develop all agricultural activities, they will use ecological labor, such as natural composting piles, Ecological Pest Management, botanic pesticides and the constructions of structures to prevent the topsoil erosion.
A training process will be developed with the 100% of the participants, covering aspects such as Organic Farming, Prevent the Topsoil Erosion, Ecological Pest Management, etc.
