Promotion of sustainable agricultural practices through demonstration of biogas plant, vermicompost and Nadep compost by conseravtion and optimum use of available local natural resources.
Project overview
A majority of the rural habitants in the project area were using fuel wood, dung cakes and other agricultural refuse as the main source of fuel for cooking purposes. A survey conducted to analyze the actual scenario of the type of fuel used and the status of chemical fertilizer consumption revealed that nearly about 86%-94% of the rural families used the traditional chullah for cooking purposes, which in turn led to deforestation and imbalance in the biosystem. It also pointed out massive utilization of chemical fertilizers and insecticides for crop production. Another observation was that an average rural family disposes 1.5 to 2.20 kg of organic solid waste, which had hazardous effect on the environmental condition, sanitation, health, and hygiene of the surrounding area. The main purpose of this project was to create awareness for beneficiaries to adopt income-generating activities through production and sale of organic manure for crop production. It was also undertaken with a view to promote wider utilization of non-conventional sources of energy like biogas.
Details of the project:
The goal and purpose of the project was to:
? Create awareness and sensitize the rural community regarding the importance of alternative sources of energy like biogas and sustainable agricultural practices by using vermi and Nadep composting methods for managing dung and organic solid wastes
? To prevent deforestation through demonstrating and disseminating the economic viability of such low cost rural technology which played a significant role for climate change at global level
? To improve the knowledge, skill and capacity of the local rural community to make them capable of managing dung, kitchen and agricultural wastes
? Holding training activities on construction and maintenance of biogas plants and Vermi/ Nadep compost
? Income generation through sale of biogas slurry and Vermi/Nadep compost
Beneficiaries:
? Rural community including men, women and rural youth
? Panchayat representatives
? Members of Yuvak and Mahila Mangal Dal

Project Characteristics and Results
Replication of project activities
? Due to economic viability and its climate-friendly technology, the project activities were fully replicable by the villagers
? Renewable energy sources like biogas were adopted
? Application of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides and other chemical constituents were considerably reduced, which thereby improved the nutritive value, soil texture and overall biodiversity system of the environment
? Vermi/Nadep compost holders were formed, who were responsible for the production and sale of compost
Project sustainability
? Solid organic wastes, crop residues, kitchen wastes and other residues were effectively disposed and application of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides was considerably reduced
? The project led towards the adoption of biogas and other forms of climate-friendly technology, resulting in sustainable lifestyle
