Gulcha Ayil Okmotu (local authorities) gave to rent 7 hectares of land to PA ? Alay Ata-Djurt? on 50 years; where were planted more than 12000 different kinds of trees.
It was established fund, which financial resources will be used for further project replication. The land holdings of given 7 hectares were shared between association members and in future all fruits and barriers they can use for own need.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The fact that the actions under the project will result not only in landslide risk reduction , but also in preservation of species included in the Red Book, that will be the direct contribution to preservation of a global biodiversity will be emphasized at seminars and other advocacy actions.
Notable Community Participation
The local population agrees to stop economic activity, which strengthens landslide risk (tillage and grazing). The local population takes care for saplings and further "soft" exploitation of the planting site (non-forest products): 10 family associations (one assocoation consists of 2-3 families) take care for 7 hectares of land and approximately 8000 saplings of walnut, plum, apple, apricots, dog-roses, hawthorn
Capacity - Building Component
The population gets new skills in sampling nursing, to collect and process of non-forest products and raises the level of knowledge about interrelation between economic activity and landslide risk. Population understand, that ploughing destroy the grass cover and water penetrate to groung. The ground get wet and risk of landslide. The level of knowledge about local flora and fauna raises as well.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The population gets new skills in sapling and nursing, to collect and process of non-forest products such as nuts, apricots, haw, hips and raises the level of knowledge about interrelation between economic activity and landslide risk. Collection of non-forest products provide people by additional income by saling these products or reduction of expenditures for bying. Using of non-forest produtcs has other influence for sustainable livelihoods:diversitification of traditional food by including fruits and berries in Kyrgyz meat kitchen.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
There are no indigenous peoples or groups of the people, which can be referred to the indigenous in Kyrgyzstan
Gender Focus
There is no obviously expressed gender approach in the project , but it is supposed women and children are active participants in sampling nursing , training in processing of non-forest products.
Project Results
Potential global benefits of the project
Thanks to the project the threat of disappearance of several brush-wood and vegetations species was decreased which are endemics on the 7 hectares of land. It was achieved due to changing of type land using (planting and protection instead of grazing) and erosion reduction on the protected area.
Link the practice of sustainable livelihoods to a GEF focal area
Overgrazing on the slopes allows degrading of land sources, increasing landslides probability and promotes disappearance of brush-wood vegetations. Project was directed on demonstration of alternative or additional to cattle-breeding economic activity. The main obstacles for demonstration of possible benefits are long-time growing of brush-wood vegetations. In compare with cattle-breeding which gives inputs on the next year the fruits from brush-wood vegetations at mountain conditions have to wait 5-10 years.
Community driveness of the project
The project entirely depended from local NGO head initiative. In spite of formal evidence of involving community members to the project activity (meetings protocols, discussions, plantings distributing, project supporting by local authority) in the fact the head of PA ?Alay-Atajurt? realized project. It had positive and negative influence on the project. Positive is all problems can be solved by one person operatively and quick. Issues connected with monitoring and reporting were solved effectively and quick as well.
Capacity ?building component
The population have obtained new skills in sampling nursing, to collect and process of non-forest products and raised the level of knowledge about interrelation between economic activity and landslide risk. The level of knowledge about local flora and fauna rose as well. It did not contribute significantly because the main problem saved, for example preservation from livestock grazing.
Gender focus
There is no obviously expressed gender approach in the project, but women and children were active participants in sampling nursing, training in processing of non-forest products. As mentioned before, the woman was a project leader.
Co-financing received
Co-financing from Public Foundation ?Alay-Atajurt? in cash is 82$, in kind 624$.
The main kinds of co-finance were labor on saplings planting and labor of local forestry specialist which helped to project with consultations. Interest of local Forestry Services in the project is explained by possibility to report to their managers on saplings realization to population and plantings implementing. Contribution of local authority (allocating plot) is explained by interesting in increasing rent payment for plot which will in the future not pasture but forestry territory.
Replication in other communities or regions
This project is appropriate for replicating in analogous geographic conditions countries but for it necessary to solve the plantings protection problem. There are no plans on up-scaling the project to a medium-sized GEF
Links between this project and the overall GEF
Links between this project and the overall GEF follows from public awareness on global environment problems, their direct involvement to the endemic plantings protection and attempts to introduce new sustainable using of natural sources in compeer with primitive cattle-breeding.
Influence on government policy
There is no obvious influence on government policy on National level but the land allocated by local authority for project implementation is illustration of project influence on the local level.

Assessment of impact of project in the GEF focal area
Project corresponds to Operational Program 4 GEF/SGP ?Mountain Ecosystems? and provides biodiversity preservation through protection of allocated 7 hectares of land.
