The project successfully accomplished its goals and objectives regarding dissemination of agroecology in nine agrarian reform settlements. In the past few years, Brazil has seen the creation of thousands of settlements due to the agrarian reform. The greatest challenge for the environmental and economic sustainability of these settlements is to overcome the production model based on the Green Revolution, highly dependent on heavy machinery and external materials, and therefore, heavy investments. Environmental sustainability is not taken into consideration within this model. Alternative reference models for rural areas in Brazil are called for, and is exactly what the grantee has managed to bring into the picture. In addition to the extractivist and agroecological activities developed, ARCA has been developing a traditional seed rescue and recovery program. Some settlements already have agroindustrial units for fruit and garden product processing and improvement, for the production of sweets, pickles, and oils. This adds value to the production. Part of the production is sold in local and regional fairs, as well as in small specialized stores in the area. This social marketing strategy has shown good results. Natural resource conservation has become a priority for the small farmers in the settlements involved in this project.
