The grantee failed to visit all of the locations planned for identification of the caves due to a lack of transportation and internal political conflicts. A partnership seems to have solved the problem. The conscience-building aspect of the project was, however, satisfactorily fulfilled. Caves which were previously unknown or ignored are, for the most part, now recorded and conserved. The following caves were identified during execution of this project: Piabinha, Alazão, Água Limpa, Onça Preta II, Furna do Gonçalo, Tatu, Vai Quem Qué, as well as various grouts and shelters. Support from partnerships with governmental and private organizations aroused the interest of the local communities in the potential for ecotourism presented by the caves. The use of fire in properties surrounding caves was reduced, according to data from one of the project?s partners. The political problems seem to have affected the project the most negatively. The grantee states that a lesson learned with this project was that group planning is paramount to the performance of an initiative, and all individuals and interests must be taken into account.
