All of the activities planned in the project proposal were successfully carried out. The benefits to the participants in this project include the creation of the Women of the Waters NGO, as well as encouragement for other forms of association. 11 plant nurseries were implemented along the borders of the Brancas River, and construction of a processing unit for fruit produced in the recovered areas is under way, bringing high expectations for generation of income resulting from the conservation initiative. 8,800 seedlings were planted in the riparian woods, and corrective measures were taken for protection of springs, erosion prevention, and fencing in of areas previously invaded by cattle. The nurseries are now focusing on producing specimens of species which have ceased to exist in the area, according to elderly community members. The nurseries are also possibilities for generation of income, given the seed banks formed and the large number of seedlings produced. Didactic material was produced for use in schools. A lack of support from the municipal authorities was the main problem faced by the project, making contacts with the schools more difficult. Despite numerous attempts at communication, the project was limited to extra-curricular activities for dissemination of the information. A large number of people became involved with the project, however, from different segments of the local society ? teachers, rural workers, children, elderly people, craftsmen/women, etc. The main lessons learned in this project were that the communities have their rhythm, and this pace must be respected, the indispensability of participation by the largest possible number of community members, and the feasibility of strengthening the role of women without damaging the pride and interests of the males.
