A community bee for implementation of the plant nursery was the first activity undertaken during project execution. An area of 1,493 square meters, chosen during a meeting with the community members, was used. The association president who passed away in 200, after participating actively in the discussions which gave rise to the project, was honored ? the nursery received his name. The role of the nursery and the four young adults managing it became clear with the arrival of the agronomist. It became clear than more than a place for breeding seedlings, it would be an experimentation space for education of the young Terena who would thenceforth identify environmental situations in need of attention within the indigenous lands, and in the definition and implementation of environmentally sustainable subsistence alternatives. The title previously used ? plant nursery managers ? was thus replaced by a more suitable title, given the responsibilities attributed to these young men ? agroenvironmental agents. The Terenas considered the project?s activities as a stepping stone in the formation of future leaderships. These four young adults are references for the Terena youth, who have started adopting violence inherited from television and large urban centers. Their capacity to interpret the outside world for the village elders is invaluable to the community, and their integration with the environment and its crucial role in the survival of their customs and traditions is paramount. 2,000 seedlings were produced by the time of the final progress report, and used for the enrichment of degraded areas. The agents were successful in their vigilance by expelling from indigenous lands a group of bait collectors, taking small fish from the local waters for use in conventional fishing. They are now engaged in the banishment of the illegal extraction of heart of palm in their territory. The interest created and the involvement of young Terenas surpassed the expectations for this initiative. Nutritional, technological, cultural, and political autonomy for the Terenas will be insured with the help of the protection of the local natural resources.
