Development of Beekeeping in the Xingu Indigenous Park (Phase II)
Desenvolvimento da Apicultura no Parque Indígena do Xingu

This project aims at continuing the activities started in the previous project, for development of beekeeping in Xingu Indigenous Park (PIX) Indigenous Villages, thus contributing to the sustainability of sociodiversity and biodiversity in the PIX. Xingu honey production was certified in 2000 by the federal authorities. Rational conventional and native beekeeping activities in the 22 villages where these activities are already taking place will be enforced, for implementation of a group of support initiatives for consolidation and expansion of honey production in the park. Technicians will have their training recycled and upgraded. Infra-structure to meet the federal requirements will be implemented for the production. Bee management and potential will be studied, for an increase in the knowledge about the subject. This will all be documented and disseminated.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A management and propolis extraction course will be offered for the beekeepers already in activity.

Notable Community Participation

Beekeeping activities in the park have participation of 42 members of 22 different villages. They have received training for the activity.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Income generated from the beekeeping activity will enable the Xingu Indigenous people to maintain their traditional lifestyles, conserving the environmental wealth found in their territory. The Xingu Indigenous Park extends over 2,642,003 hectares, housing approximately three thousand five hundred indigenous people of 14 different ethnic groups. It is one of the main forest conservation areas in the state of Mato Grosso, according to official deforestation maps.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

This project was planned and designed by an indigenous association, which will execute the proposed activities and receive the direct benefits of the initiative.

Project Results

According to the final progress report submitted by the grantee, the following activities were undertaken during execution of this project: technical assistance offered in 5 villages by technicians and local indigenous monitors; qualification of the honey coordinator and indigenous monitors; contracting of a professional technician; meeting with beekeepers, leaderships, and technicians; construction of a honey house; acquisition of equipment for a second honey house; introduction to computers course; wax production training; propolis extraction course; visit to the first beekeeper to receive organic certification in the country (state of Minas Gerais); restorations to the honey houses in 4 villages; quality control analysis; visit to other native beekeeping experiences supported by SGP Brazil; organization of the photographic records; publication of a brochure. The results of this project served as subsidies for the development of a base text for a business plan, production spreadsheets, and the label for the honey. The encouragement given to the native beekeeping activity is worthy of note, as the species are important to the biome. The grantee has achieved the proposed objectives for this project.
