Mistrust on the part of communities at the start of the project was to be expected, but once individual responsibilities were clarified, the work progressed more smoothly. Training courses on management and commercialization of the faveira were offered, resulting in alternative collection techniques which helped conserve the trees. With the licensing of faveira extractivism, 100% of the agroextractivists involved were certified. The income resulting from the activity was greatly improved. The activities were disseminated in different meetings and seminars. The families thus left their previous situation of being exploited and started becoming protagonists in their own story. The use of middlemen was eradicated, and the majority of the smallholders involved has become aware of the negative impacts of the use of fire and the importance of conservation. Participative monitoring has helped in this process. The main lesson learned in this project is that not only is the Cerrado extremely important in ecological terms, it can make a big difference in the lives of the traditional populations who inhabit it and have a history of being forgotten by public policy.
