Consolidation of Agroforesty Systems, Formation of Environmental Agents and Integrated Ecosystem Management in the Timbira Villages

This continuity project has as its objective the consolidation of agroextractivist practices in the agroforestry system demonstrative units, recycling and honing the knowledge of the current agroforestry agents. In 18 months, a roster of environmental agents will be formed through training and capacity-building for recognition of environmental threats in their areas resulting from predatory wood-cutting, hunting and native fruit collecting. A partnership with the National Indigenous People?s Foundation (FUNAI) and IBAMA will be secured for concrete support to the integrated ecosystem management practiced by the Timbira Indigenous People.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

10 new agents will be qualified, in addition to the 15 trained in the previous SGP project, to identify the potentialities and threats in the local environment.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The agents trained during this project will identify and suggest more sustainable livelihoods for the community members.

Notable Community Participation

The agroforestry agents, the plant nursery managers and trainees will all be representatives from the Timbira Villages.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

This project has Indigenous communities as its aim. Resources and technical assistance will be offered to the Timbira co-authors and co-executors of this project.

Project Results

During this project, the following activities took place: two plant nurseries were installed in the Rio Vermelho Village, with training for two managers; a plant nursery in the Nova Village advanced two local plant nursery managers to environmental agents; an orchard without management was found in the Prata Village, and gardens were improved; the São José Village inhabitants felt the need to move into a different area, so no plant nurseries could be implemented in the area; the lack of water in the Patizal Village made it impossible to install a plant nursery in that area, but interest in the agroecologic practices was high; the recently formed Palmeira Village showed great interest in the implementation of a nursery in the area in the near future, but the chief already planned on receiving plants from the nurseries in other villages; two environmental agents were qualified in the Cocalinho Village; the Buriti Comprido Village expected the arrival of plants from the central nursery in Carolina, state of Maranhão; the existing nurseries in the Porquinhos Village were operational, but the managers sought further training to improve their techniques; the Governador Village had support from other sources, which funded a manager for their successful nursery, but with the end of the funds, he left. The main difficulties faced were the lack of funds to continue monitoring in the villages once the SGP grants were exhausted. Many seeds were bought and transported. This problem was soled by the use of different funding sources by CTI to continue the monitoring and improvement of the seed banks and plant nurseries in the villages. The use of fire for planting is no longer a problem, thanks to the environmental agents trained in this project. The production cycle is also shorter, which yields higher turnover. Erosion is also disappearing with the plants from the nurseries being transported to house gardens. The plants from the nurseries will be used to disseminate this project?s activities. The work of the agents will also improve food security in the villages.
