The Andalucia Agrarian Reform Settlement, located in Southern Mato Grosso do Sul, in the municipality of Nioaque, has approximately 166 families occupying an area of about 5 thousand hectares. This settlement has become a refrence in all of the state, due partly to the success of this project, which reached all of its objectives. Differentiated and complementary activities were introduced by ECOA in an attempt to generate income for the families. A plant nursery and a weaving plant were introduced. The nursery produces native plant species, from which dyes are extracted for the weaving. Bags, carpets, and other products come from the loom in the shop. Seeds and rinds produce buttons and decorations. A textile designer trained a group of women in the settlement, who learned to sew, weave, and finish the pieces which add a regional identity to the products. The weavers use coconut shells, wood, jatobá seeds, corn straw, and other materials. The handcrafts have very high quality, and are currently sold in Campo Grande and São Paulo. All of the proceeds go to the women who operate the weaving shop, who have become responsible for more than half of the family income. The attention drawn to the settlement has brought about ideas for tourist visitation projects. The environmental education aspect of this project is very strong, with a long process of training for the members of the settlement, who can now identify native Cerrado species. They conserve the legal reserve areas and water resources, in addition to advertising less harmful farming techniques which are nonetheless profitable. Many Baru trees were planted for future use. The sustainable use of forest resources makes the weaving activity vital for the conservation of local biodiversity.
