The project had as its objective the implementation of Agroforestry systems in the São Francisco Agrarian Reform Settlement. The objectives, according to the final report, were reached with success. There was, however, considerable delay in the execution of the planned activities due to delays in the licensing by the federal government of areas for the implementation of the Agroforestry Systems. The rainy season was thus missed, and the planting had to be postponed. The commuity showed little interest at first for the maintenance of the nursery, but the grantee responded by setting up incentives and strategies for community mobilization. The activities undertaken were: regularization of the area in the settlement for implementation of the system; value study for the system; signature of contract insuring responsibility for monitoring of the project?s activities; implementation of the nursery, with proper irrigation; training courses in seed collection and nursery management; training courses in seed handcrafts; planting of seeds; visits in other settlements in the surrounding area; development of an environmental education program, viewing the recovery of the springs. Deforestation and the use of fire in the settlement was drastically reduced. Degraded areas were recovered with the implementation of the Agroforestry systems. Despite the considerable difficulties faced, the project was successful in achieving the planned results, offering opportunities for growth and education in the community and SGP Brazil as a whole.
