SAFs no ASF (Sistemas Agroflorestais no Assentamento São Francisco): ocupação sustentável de área do Cerrado
Rational management of the biologic diversity and reduction of soil degradation and desertification processes are the main objectives of this project. This will provide an economic and environmental alternative for sustainable occupation of the cerrado, in the São Francisco Agrarian Reform Settlement. 30 ha of agroforestry systems will be implemented to the benefit of 30 families, reversing the current trend of land occupation toward a more rational and sustainable model. The qualification process in the settlement will, through a continuous process, show evidences of the mid and long-term feasibility of this alternative model. This project is intended as a pilot for replication in the surroundings and elsewhere.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
15 representatives from the settlement were chosen among 35 participants in a project design workshop to come up with a project that will not only affect the involved families, but hopefully bring environmental consciousness to the remaining 40 families in the settlement, and, later the 1,000 families inhabiting the area. The execution of the project will be shared between ICV technicians and settlement inhabitants, who will build a plant nursery and collect seeds in a community bee.
Capacity - Building Component
The appropriate training courses for the achievement of project objectives will be offered, guaranteeing not only its success, but also the sustainability of its results.
