Conservation of naked osman, endemic fish (Diptychus Dybowskii) of Issykkul Lake by artificial reproduction and information campaign among local population living near to places of osman spawning, fattening and wintering.

The food fish resources of Issykkul Lake considerably undermined because of extraction at spawning time, unlimited catching, the poaching, increased predatory fish pressure (strange trout, pike perch), and stoppage of artificial reproduction. As a result one of the endemic of Issik-Kul Naked osman is critically endangered. According to official returns the cases of Osman catching was not registered since 1985 but from poachers words there are isolated instances of catch.
The main goal of the project is artificial reproduction of osman by reconstruction of existent hatchery, supplying it with special equipment.
During the project realization the follow results are expected to be achieved:
Ecological
? Conservation of genetic resources of Naked osman (endemic fish of Issykkul Lake in Kyrgyzstan)
? rising public awareness on environment problems
Economic
? in future prospect it is possible osman amplification to commercial level

Actions to be undertaken by Public Association ?Edita?:
1. Determination of locations where possibility to catch osman is high. Catch of male-osman is organized
2. Preparation of incubatory premises, purchase of needed equipment, materials, preparation of stimulators
3. Nurture of grubs to tough stage
4. Release of young fish in suitable locations
5. Advocacy of the project aim and goals and necessity of osman reproduction
5 families of Grygorevka village, members of Public Association ?Edita?, employees of fish work will be involved to the project implementation.
The main activities will take place in the outlet of Chonaksuu, Kichiaksuu, Chonkoisuu, Chetkoisuu rivers in the northern coast and Akterek, Uchkainar, Darhan, Barskoon rivers in the southern coast of Issykkul Lake.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The fact that the actions under the project will result not only in occurrence of additional sources of the income of the local population, but also restoration of species included in the Red Book, that will be the direct contribution to conservation of a global biodiversity will be emphasized at seminars and other advocacy actions. Real practice demonstrates that consumption of resources without renewal has no the future.

Capacity - Building Component

The local population gets new skills not only on catching but also reproduction, marketing of tourist services connected to amateur fishing. Local implementing NGO gets experience of realization of the projects in sphere of biovariety and together with the partner of the project owns and maintains the fry reproduction equipment and stocks.

Notable Community Participation

The local population participates in protection of hatchery and fattening places, as these places are a potential sites for attraction of the tourists - fishers.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The successful realization of the project will allow the population to increase number of productions and rendered services.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

There are no indigenous peoples or groups of the people, which can be referred to the indigenous in Kyrgyzstan

Gender Focus

There is no obviously expressed gender approach in the project, but women will be engaged only in fry cultivation. A woman is a leader of implementing NGO.

Project Results

The adult naked osman was not caught during project implementation time. The growing of osman`s young fish was the last stage of the project. Because of the absence of adult osman fish this stage of the project was not implemented. That`s why, NSC members decided to stop the project. But this result showed, that without urgent large scale intervention, we really will lose endemic fish species in the Issyk-Kul Lake. The naked osman included in the Red Book.

Assessment of impact of project in the GEF focal area
Project corresponds to Operational Program 2 GEF/SGP ?Coastal, marine and freshwater ecosystems? and promotes the conservation of biological diversity and its components in environmentally vulnerable areas. The naked osman included in the Red Book.

On the basis of terminated activity opportunity aroused to develop it to PDFA project. Adult naked osman was not caught during project implementation time. The narrative report of the project
Absence of reproductive osman was the main problem of the project. For the solution of the problem with reproductive fish, searches in additional districts and places not outlined in the project were attempted. Search for the lake forms in Orto-Tokoi Reservoir, and arriving forms in the rivers Chon-Oruktu, Kichi-Oruktu, Oi-Tal, Frunze, Kuturgu, Tyup, Korumdu, Chon Ak-Suu, Kara-Tala, Chichkan, Darchan, Barskaun, Jergalan, Jety-Oguz, Ton, and Ak-Terek. But all attempted measures have failed.
