Agroforestry and Sustainable Agriculture
The vegetation of Bawku East District of Ghana is Sudan savannah with serious cases of deforestation and threat of desertification. The problem of deforestation is caused by high human population, slash and burn agriculture, bushfires and high livestock populations. The NGO worked with 5 communities using train-the ?trainer techniques to teach the community members the following: composting, soil conservation and erosion control, nursery practices, agroforestry, bushfire management and the construction and use of Fuel Efficient Woodsaving (FEW) Stoves. By the end of the project, the community members could prepare compost manure and nurse their own seedlings. Prior to the project, people in the area considered it a taboo to plant trees because they believed anybody who planted a tree will die.
