Protection of Biodiversity in Guakoo Sacred Grove
Protection of Biodiversity in Guakoo Sacred Grove
The Guakoo Sacred Grove at Pokuase is the only surviving dry semi-deciduous forest on the outskirts of Accra, which typically falls within the coastal savannah shrubland of Ghana. The grove also forms part of the green belt that is to encircle the city of Accra. This grove has recently suffered encroachment by farmers felling trees and quarrying along the border. The NGO in consultation with the traditional custodians of the grove established a buffer zone around the grove. The community was trained to establish nurseries, woodlots and practice agroforestry within the buffer zone. Community members were also taught bushfire prevention and control and the use of environmentally friendly energy sources for cooking including solar energy and Fuel Efficient Woodsaving Stoves.
