Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture Development
Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture Development
The project was sited in the Paga and Navrongo areas of Upper East Region of Ghana ? a guinea savannah area with serious deforestation problems caused by bushfires, over-extraction of fuelwood and the practice of slash and burn agriculture. These practices are causing a threat to the few savannah forests and their biodiversity. Women?s groups in 10 communities were trained in nursery practices, agrofarestry, bushfire prevention and control; and the construction and maintenance of Fuel Efficient Woodsaving Stoves. The project created an increased interest in tree planting including fruit trees. The women later trained other communities to construct their own stoves attesting to the impact of the project in the areas.
