Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary: Community-Based Conservation Project
Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary: Community-Based Conservation Project
The Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary is located in the Nkoranza District in the dry semi-deciduous forest in the transition zone of Ghana. This zone is quickly changing from forest to grassland so the community?s dry semi-deciduous forest is an isolated forest that is surrounded by grassland. The people and their traditional leaders have used ancient taboos to protect this forest which also is home to two endangered species of monkeys ? Black and White Colobus monkeys, Colobus polykomos and the Mona monkey, Cercopithecus mona. As well as large members of colourful butterflies and other wildlife. The project for the first time negotiated with the people of 5 adjoining communities to contribute land and become part of this conservation effort. A total of 600 A of forest and intervening grassland have been surveyed and reserved for the project by the 7 communities. The project has made an inventory of flora and fauna in the area, labelled all the tree types and censused the population of monkeys ?342 mona and 160 colobus. Some troops of monkeys have already spread to the other 5 communities, enforcing the need to involve these other communities in the project. The project also trained community members in tour guiding and interpretation as well as housekeeping and front-desk procedures for managing the guesthouse. The project has popularized Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary as Ghana?s No. 1 community-based ecotourism destination, which has won two regional and one national award.
