The Morago and White Volta Rivers occur in the Bawku East District and the northeastern corner of Ghana, which is an arid/semi-arid area. These rivers are bordered by Government designated forest reserves and hence are protected areas. The forest forms part of an international biodiversity corridor for the movement of wildlife, particularly the African Elephants, Lexodonta africana between Burkina Faso, Ghana and northern Togo. The northeast corner of Ghana has experienced perennial crop raiding by elephants leading to human-elephant conflicts in which elephants have been killed in the past. GEF/SGP identified the basis of the problem as degradation of the reserves because of deforestation, bushfires, poor landuse practices by fringe communities, particularly unsustainable slash and burn agriculture leading to loss of soil fertility, and encroachment of these forest reserves. The objective of the project was to build the capacity of fringe communities on sound ecologically friendly agriculture and production processes, particularly soil fertility so as to reduce encroachment on the forest reserves. Community members reported increases in crop yield from the use of crop residues and compost manure and the adoption of crop rotation with legumes. The incidence of striga, a parasitic plant has decreased. Women reported of the benefits of fuel-efficient Woodsaving stoves and reduction in extraction of fuelwood from the forest. Some members have taken up bee keeping as an additional means of livelihood.
