Ferryboat Services and Hardware Trading Business Project

The Project aims at contributing to the upliftment of the economic status of the residents of the community, especially the members of the cooperative through the following: 1. the provision of the best quality of transportation services to foreign and domestic tourists going to Port Barton, San Vicente, and El Nido, Palawan from Sitio Sabang, Barangay Cabayugan, Puerto Princesa City and vice versa; 2. putting up of a trading business on spare parts for motorboats and other vehicles; and 3. helping in the conservation, preservation and protection of the environment within the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP). Total grant amount is 35,417 UNF + $3,394 GEF.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

During each pump boat trip where visitors are being ferried to and from the tourist destination and attractions, a tour guide and/or operator/assistant will be speaking and/or giving a short presentation on the significant features of the PPSRNP and the various tourist attractions in the area. Some flyers, brochures and other materials will also be distributed for further promotion and awareness building.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Only a handful of Tagbanuas are members of the cooperative.

Capacity - Building Component

The SSFSC will train its members in cooperative development and enhancement/pre-membership training; cooperative accounting and bookkeeping; cooperative operation and management; basic tour guiding and first aid; and paralegal; and waste management. The paralegal training is designed for the deputization of trainees as forest protection officers.

Notable Community Participation

The Sabang Sea Ferry Service Cooperative (SSFSC) has memberships who are residents within the PPSRNP. The members are the operators and owners each of pump boats that bring visitors and tourists from Sabang and the Underground River. The CBO envisions involving some members in bringing visitors from the PPSRNP to El Nido and San Vicente , two (2) tourists town of western Palawan. They will build a bigger boat for this purpose. The members will also be engaged in the promotion of PPSRNP as a tourism destination through flyers, brochures, and other IEC materials.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The coop will operate a Hardware Trading Store, that will sell basic and common spare parts used to repair boats and other hardware items. This will help the community avail of such materials without spending much for transportation in going to the main market in the city proper. As such the pump boats can continue to operate without delay. The coop will use the profits from these ventures for distribution to members as rebates and dividends. The coop will build mooring buoys to prevent further destruction of the marine areas in the vicinity of the park.

Gender Focus

The women members will act as storekeeper/vendor, dispatcher/s of boat trips, and as advocate in the IEC activities. The men will take care of the ferrying visitors to and from the tourist destinations or attractions in the area. During off-season, the men go fishing to augment their income.
