The Centre is a Traditional Herbal Medicine Centre that uses many different herbs from the savannah zone of Ghana. Unfortunately, because of increases in human population and the demand for more farmlands, wild areas from which these resources are gathered are shrinking. Other threats include bushfires and free grazing of livestock. As an answer to these threats, the Centre has been funded in the Pilot Phase to do in-situ protection of some species but this has faced serious bushfire.
In this project, the Centre was linked to plant taxonomist of the Ghana Herbarium and a horticulturist from the local university to assist in the collection, preservation and scientific identification of the medicinal plants used by the Centre. 86 plant species were collected and identified to genus and species. These species were also studied for propagation and the techniques taught to the Centre and 5 other herbalists.11 species were successfully propagated by seed and 33 by transplanting saplings. A nursery of these seedlings was established for later planting in the field. The Centre has won several Regional and National Awards for its previous work. The current project has been scaled up and forms part of a GEF Large Grants Project by the World Bank entitled Northern Savanna Biodiversity Conservation Project.
