The planning grant was used by the CBO to develop the fuel efficient stove in order that cooking of food and boiling of water at household level can be done at a low cost using the freely available paddy husk.

It was successful as a collaborative effort with the technical input being given by the Agricultural Engineering Unit of the Open University of Sri Lanka. They provided the design and manufacturing and testing was done by the NGO. A community blacksmith could manufacture the design with little training.

As the design was tested and problems came to the fore, the design was modified accordingly and a final stove manufactured with minimum problems.

Due to the cost of the raw material used, the stove had to be priced at Rs. 900/= which was high for the village community. However it sold at the World Environment Day fair held in Colombo.

The next step of bringing down the cost of the stove would have to be taken forward at a bigger project proposed for this work.
