Conservation of Elephants and their Habitats along the Red Volta River

Following the GEF/SGP sponsored research into Elephant Crop Raiding in the Red Volta River area, - the international biodiversity corridor - by the Elephant Research Group and a Planning Grant($1000) to PAS, Garu, this main project was funded to address the problems of unsustainable landuse practices, forest degradation and agriculture by fringe communities. These problems were identified as the remote factors that underline the human-elephant conflicts in the area. Addressing these problems will also improve the livelihood of the communities since they are basically farmers. The main objectives of the project is to build the capacity of the communities in the following areas: managing elephant crop-raiding by learning to scare away elephants; natural resource conservation and sustainable use; soil fertility improvement and soil conservation; integrating ecologically sound livestock farming into their farming systems; construction and use of Fuel Efficient Woodsaving Stoves; and bee

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Community groups were trained in soil fertility improvement techniques, bushfire management, bee-keeping, honey processing and packaging, construction of efficient woodfuels stoves, composting, blasting techniques to scare elephants and tree planting.

Policy Impact

Creation of migratory coordiors of wildlife between Ghana and Burkina faso

Sale of honey, rearing of small ruminant on commercial basis and donkey carts for transportation and plouging.

The project was implemented by the chiefs, tindaana and people of Zongoyiri, Nangodi, Tilli and Kusanaba.

Gender Focus

Women groups were assisted in small ruminnat rearing and constrcution of efficient woodfuel stoves.

Project Results

The project led to conservation of elephants within the Morago/Red Volta Reserve. About 1000 farmers were assisted with alternative livelihood activities including rearing of improved cockerel, goats donkeys bee-keeping and pigs rearing. About 200 farmers were introduced to agroforestry, and soil improvement and water conservation techniques. The project provided donkey carts to farmers to help in the transportation of farm produce to the market.

140 people from 48 communities torughout the Chiefdom were trained in various tchniques including the use of blasters to scare elephants.

Community laws on wildlife were enacted and enforced and this reduced crop rainding by wildl animals.
The project assisted the local community in Binaba area to construct a hand dug well.

About 206 animals were medicated. 40 farmers from 35 communities were trained in livestock medication including dewroming, vacination, and dipping against ecto-parasites.

25 farmers were assisted to install 25 bee-hives. Various technologies in bee-keeping were introduced. this included the Keyan top-bar, locap pots and grass hives.

- Rapid Response has been equipped to control the elephant crop raiding.
- Incidence of bushfires has been minimized
